No-spend fashion adventure

February 6, 2010

First, this is what I hoped to work on this weekend while T is away on his first bike race (congratulations — I’m so proud!):

As you can see, at the time of this photo, all I’d managed to accomplish was a run (two runs!), watching Grey’s, and organizing my dresser/closet.  I didn’t actually go to DSW — I just decided that it was no longer necessary.

The reason I’m sharing this is the “shorts with tights” on my list, having seen them most recently in this JCrew ad.  It is a little silly to list an outfit…  But I wanted to branch out!   I didn’t have any shoes that I thought would work with my black shorts/tights (hence the DSW item).  Then I remembered — I have brown shorts that I never wear, brown tights, and brown boots.  Perfect!

I was baffled on what to put on top and didn’t have the appropriate necklace (or scarf or other accessory) to make it look right.  I tried out two looks, as the first one with the white shirt wasn’t quite doing it for me.  I found this photo online and decided that a turtleneck was my answer, and came up with the second look.  This is the one I went with.

The next step was wearing it in public.  I was a little nervous.  My usual style is subdued — nothing that would draw any attention to me.  This was absolutely not the most crazy outfit I saw, but it is still outside my comfort zone.  But I took a deep breath, and headed to Lush (and Gap and West Elm, with a stop by REI) to do my errands.   (BTW, I bought two bath fizzies at Lush as a gift, and they ended up giving me a free full sized face mask.  They said they over ordered and were giving them away!  Wooo!  I was already planning a self facial tonight!)

Guess what?  No one pointed and laughed or called me a fashion victim!  At least not to my face! So.   Shorts with tights was a success, and I created a new outift soley out of things I already owned.

And to mimic fashion blogger style, here is what I had on:

  • Brown shorts, Old Navy, several years old, no idea what they cost
  • Brown Boots, Nordstrom, about 1.5 years old, I think they were roughly $100
  • Brown tights, Target, 2008, whatever tights cost
  • Tissue weight striped turtleneck, JCrew, Jan 2008, something like $15 on sale
  • Cardigan, Old Navy, Fall 2009, about $20

To be honest, I’m still not 100% convinced of the shorts over tights look — the main point was trying something new and being more brave about fashion.  (Yes, I consider an almost entirely brown outfit brave.)

I actually really like the idea of shorts & tights! And I think it looks good on you, and I definitely like the turtleneck better. Way to go, I should take some inspiration from you! 🙂

I like it! Great taste. I think shorts and tights can be really cute – it’s something I’ve worn to uni, and I can see myself doing it again occasionally on the odd weekend. It’s scary trying out a new look – I’m always convinced people are staring and sniggering behind my back.

Very cute! I like it a lot. You pull it off really well! Good call on the turtleneck – it’s also more appropriate for this cold weather! Well…what us So Cal residents call cold…

I actually like both of the pictures, but prefer the white top better… that said I probably have little fashion sense. Well done on being brave.

I think it is just a matter of preference — no right/wrong answers! I thought the white top needed some sort of longer necklace or something.

I like the look on the left, too, you could also wear that! 🙂 Awesome job.

Both look great! What a good way to stay warm… I think the best part of the outfit are your boots! 🙂 Did T like the look?

YAY!!! It is super cute….I TOTALLY know what you mean about being afraid to go out in public w/ a fashionable outfit! But you look awesome! Can we expect more of these posts???

I hope so! But it is hard to say — I’m trying to keep my fashion experiments low budget!

Congrats on trying something new and brave with your style. Honestly, shorts with tights isn’t my thing, but I give you props for doing it!

I rocked shorts and tights for the first time last year, after not having done it since high school in the early 90s. 🙂 Guess I broke the rule of not wearing a trend if you were around the first time. You’re about 5 years (I think) younger than I am, though, and you look great!

    Also–I heart Lush!

Ha! I didn’t even know it was previously a trend — though that could be less my age and more the conservative-ish area I grew up in.

You look great! I love it. =)
