Sespe River Trail

May 31, 2010

Our backpacking trip was not everything we had hoped.  We went to Sespe Wilderness area, which is super close to L.A.

However… I do not recommend this hike for summer!-It is definitely more of a very late fall or early spring hike!  It was too hot to be really enjoyable and there was almost no shade.  This wasn’t unexpected – we knew the trail.  However, living so close to the beach, I forget how ridiculously hot it can be inland.

Cooling off in the river at the campsite was kind of nice, and camping out in the wilderness under the stars is always great.  Other than that, it was mostly a bust.   There were a few river crossings that required us to take of our boots – and one that I thought I didn’t need to that resulted in a wet boot!  The glue on my boots started to fail due to the extremely hot sandy trail, and now I need to get them repaired.  T somehow managed to ruin our morning oatmeal, and it was just an all around fail of a trip.  We have matching blisters on our pinky toes.  Ouch!

We decided to head home the next day and have a nice beach day on the holiday instead.

Another highlight we stopped in Ojai for some pizza and beer — delicious!

We still have a couple other major trips planned this summer, and I know how much more I enjoy challenging mountain hikes than super hot canyon hikes.  But yeah, I wasn’t too impressed with our weekend.  I’ll try again in a different season!

Now… off to the beach!

What a bummer! I’m glad you guys decided to turn it into something good and head to the beach, sounds like it wound up to be a good lesson and wasn’t a total bust.

What I wouldn’t give for a little sun up here….all we have is rain, rain, rain.

Enjoy the beach! I don’t even want to deal with the crazy crowds. But a hot canyon hike doesn’t sound like too much fun either.

Beach was actually quite nice! More crowded than usual, but as long as you don’t have to deal with parking/driving (we don’t) and can escape when you want (we can!) it was good.
