Baby Item Log

Purchased Used:

Generally, we tried to buy big ticket items used.  This is mostly driven by a desire to reduce the consumerist waste of baby stuff.  It makes me anxious to spend a lot of money on things that have a limited life.  Also, I like nice things.  I’d rather get a high quality nice used thing rather than a lower quality new thing. Many smaller items were available used, but there is the hassle of driving around town to get them to save $10 or $15 and I generally didn’t do that.  I did regularly check what was available for free/cheap in my neighborhood, but didn’t score much.

  • Oeuf Robin/Rhea crib via NextDoor, $300 (came with toddler conversion kit and a changing station that can be secured to crib or a dresser – probably will secure to a dresser since we have space and securing to the crib seems odd).  It came with an organic latex mattress, which we assessed and opted to use.
  • Halo Bassinest Premier via NextDoor, $100 and infant insert via Facebook Marketplace, $20.  Infant insert was a bit of a risk because it overall doesn’t have great reviews and I can’t return it, and probably has limited resale.
  • City Mini GT stroller via Craigslist, $75.  This model is older and it wasn’t the color I wanted, but it was in good shape and the price is right.
  • Dresser (many years old version of this model in a light oak color) for $175.  I stalked all the used item sites for MONTHS trying to find someone selling a solid wood dresser in my tastes for less than $200, and finally scored this.  People were selling used IKEA dressers for more than this.
  • Stokke Trip Trapp high chair with baby set for $150.
  • 6 sleepsack / swaddles for $10 via neighbor on Craigslist:  4 SwaddleMe lightweight cotton sleepsacks (7-14 lbs, 0-4 months), 1 small SwaddleMe fleece sleepsack (7-14 lbs, 0-4 months), 1 newborn Halo cotton sleepsack (6-12 lbs, 0-3 months)

Purchased New (before baby was born):

We opted to buy a new car seat out of safety concerns.  We also tended to buy furnishings new – it was hard to find a used rocker/glider that met my criteria.  I have a hard time finding used rugs I like.  The reconfigurable closet system will last a long time and increased storage options a ton.

  • Maxi Cosi Mico Max 30 car set for $160 (including taxes/shipping).  I really really really wanted the Nuna Pipa, but couldn’t justify the $300+tax price tag for something we’ll use for about a year.
  • Lillebaby all seasons carrier for $134 (including taxes, and also got a $25 gift card). One reason I bought this new is because there seem to be some knock off baby carriers in circulation, and used ones were not significantly cheaper.
  • Elfa closet system for about $500.
  • New rug for about $300.  Not strictly a baby item, but it is going in the nursery.
  • Changing pad / cover, $30ish
  • IKEA LEKA baby gym and  cloud island elephant play mat
  • Pack N’ Play Jetsetter, $80
  • Many miscellaneous small items:
    • Diapers, wipes, diaper cream
    • Kid hangers
    • NoseFrida, NoseFrida Filters
    • Baby tylenol
    • 2 pacifiers
    • Baby wash/shampoo
    • Drying rack for bottles, bottle brush
    • Bottles, etc.  We settled on Lansinoh Momma, but also used Comotomo and tried various others.

Free Items:

I accepted everything that was offered that I thought I could use, but didn’t go out of my way to collect random free stuff that wasn’t explicitly on my wish list.  Again, clothes have such short lifespans and almost no value on the used market.  I’m super happy to give these a new life, then pass them on when I’m done.

  • So many awesome baby clothes from SIL
  • Moby wrap from SIL
  • Assortment of baby clothes from local buy/sell/trade group
  • MyBreastFriend nursing pillow from local Buy Nothing group
  • Ubbi diaper pail from local Buy Nothing group (thrown in when I picked up the nursing pillow)
  • Even more baby clothes mailed to me by an out-of-town friend looking to get rid of them.  So many cute clothes!
  • Some random samples of bottles and other small baby items

More free stuff that I got later on (after baby was born)

  • Umbrella stroller, maxi cosi Kaia that our car seat clicks into as well
  • IKEA toy storage shelf and bins
  • Jumper-roo
  • Push walker
  • Toys
